The writer of Proverbs is saying, if you can’t rule your own spirit, if you lack discipline and self-control, you’re like a city with broken down walls. Without strong walls, you have areas in your life where the enemy can come in and take hold. God made you in His extraordinary image. He calls you a masterpiece. He’s equipped you. And He will empower you. Hebrews 12:11 says, “No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace.” Discipline builds up the eternal, the important things in your life. Perhaps you need to identify a few areas of your life that need to be strengthened. Maybe you need to stop doing some things that keep you weak or to let go of a few people who are breaking down your inner strength. Maybe you just need to focus on it and let self-control and discipline bring a great harvest in your life! It’s easy to tell yourself, “When my child gets her life straightened out, then I will have a good day.” Or, “When I finally get out of debt, my days will be good ones.” Or, “If only my husband would change his ways, it would be easy to find good in my days.” All of these and a thousand other excuses only put “seeing the good” off to some future time when things are different. That’s not the way God wants us to live. He wants us to see the good in today no matter what the present circumstances look like.
